Course overview
Our BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree equips you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills demanded by employers across the technology sector. From your first term you will write code in languages including Python, Java, and C++, whilst exploring the mathematical principles that underpin computation, data structures, and algorithm design.
The programme is structured around core computer science disciplines — software engineering, databases, operating systems, and computer networks — complemented by optional modules in artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and cloud computing. You will work in our dedicated computing laboratories using industry-standard tools such as Git, Docker, and cloud platforms.
Luma's School of Computing maintains close links with regional technology employers including software houses, fintech firms, and digital agencies in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. Guest lectures, hackathons, and employer-led project briefs ensure your learning reflects current industry practice.
In your final year you will undertake an individual capstone project, often in collaboration with an external partner organisation. Recent projects have included machine learning models for healthcare triage, secure voting systems, and mobile applications for local charities.
Graduates are well prepared for roles as software developers, systems analysts, and IT consultants, or for postgraduate study in specialist areas such as artificial intelligence or cyber security.

- DDM–DMM in a relevant Extended Diploma, depending on the programme.

Placements
You may opt to undertake a paid sandwich placement between Years 2 and 3 with employers such as Jaguar Land Rover, HSBC Technology, or regional software consultancies. Placements typically last 9–12 months and count towards your degree transcript. Our placement team supports CV workshops, mock interviews, and employer networking events throughout Year 2.
Students who complete a placement year consistently achieve higher final degree classifications and graduate employment rates. Recent placement students have worked on cloud migration projects, mobile app development, and quality assurance for financial services platforms.
Facilities
The School of Computing is housed in the Hawthorn Building, featuring six specialist laboratories with high-specification workstations, dual-monitor setups, and 10 Gbps network connectivity. Our Cyber Security Lab includes isolated network segments for penetration testing exercises, whilst the Human-Computer Interaction suite supports usability testing with eye-tracking equipment.
All students receive access to Microsoft Azure Dev Tools, GitHub Enterprise, and virtual machine environments for coursework. The 24-hour Learning Resource Centre provides additional study spaces, and our Makerspace offers 3D printing and electronics prototyping equipment for interdisciplinary projects.

- What A-level subjects do I need for Computer Science?
- Entry requirements vary by programme, but most undergraduate courses expect relevant subjects at grade B or above. We also welcome applicants with BTEC Extended Diplomas, T Levels, Access to HE Diplomas, and equivalent international qualifications. - Can I study part-time?
- Many of our postgraduate programmes offer part-time study over two to four years, allowing you to balance work and family commitments. Part-time undergraduate study is available on selected courses; contact admissions@luma.ac.uk for current options. Part-time students have the same access to library resources, careers support, and student services as full-time students.
- Are there scholarships available?

- Transfer applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. You will need to provide transcripts and module descriptions so we can assess credit for prior learning.
