Public Lecture: Ethics and Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education

The School of Computing hosts a public lecture examining ethical questions arising from artificial intelligence adoption in universities. Professor Lin Zhang chairs a panel including a data protection specialist, a student representative and an employer partner from a regional technology firm.

Topics include generative AI in assessed coursework, bias in algorithmic decision-making, intellectual property concerns and preparing graduates for workplaces where AI tools are ubiquitous. The lecture reflects Luma's published guidance on academic integrity and AI, implemented across all faculties in autumn 2025.

The event targets academic staff, students, school teachers and employers, though all members of the public are welcome. Audience participation is encouraged during a forty-minute panel discussion following opening presentations. Printed summaries of the university's AI policy will be available at the venue.

Registration closed for this February 2026 event, which attracted 280 attendees. A recording and transcript are available on the computing school website. The panel will reconvene for a follow-up session in autumn 2026 after one year of policy implementation.
