Disability Support

We encourage applicants and students to disclose disabilities, long-term health conditions, mental health conditions and specific learning differences such as dyslexia so we can arrange appropriate support. Disclosure on your UCAS or postgraduate application triggers contact from the disability team before enrolment, though you may disclose at any stage.

Disclosure is confidential and shared only with staff who need to know to implement your support plan. It does not affect admissions decisions except where professional body fitness-to-practise standards apply, in which case we work with you to understand achievable pathways.

Reasonable adjustments may include exam arrangements such as extra time or rest breaks, provision of lecture materials in advance, permission to record sessions, ergonomic equipment and flexible attendance where disability affects participation. Each student's Support Plan is created collaboratively with a disability adviser and shared with your consent.

Academic staff receive guidance on implementing adjustments. If an adjustment is not working, contact your disability adviser promptly to review arrangements.

Study skills tutors provide one-to-one support for students with dyslexia and related conditions. Specialist mentors support students whose mental health or autism affects study. Note-takers and practical assistants are funded through Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA) where students are eligible.

The Assistive Technology Suite in the library offers software including text-to-speech, mind mapping and voice recognition, with training sessions scheduled each term.

The Edgewater campus includes step-free routes, accessible toilets, hearing loops in lecture theatres and reserved parking bays. An access map is available on the estates website and as a mobile app. Scholars Village and Riverside Hall include adapted bedrooms; notify accommodation of requirements when applying.

Temporary mobility impairments—for example following sports injuries—can be accommodated through short-term loan of equipment and timetable adjustments. Contact disability support as early as possible to arrange assistance.
