Team sports, fitness facilities and recreational activities at Luma University's Sports and Wellbeing Centre.

Sports and Wellbeing Centre

The Sports and Wellbeing Centre on the Edgewater campus opened in 2022 and provides a 25-metre swimming pool, fitness suite with 80 stations, sports hall, climbing wall, squash courts and outdoor pitches. All students receive membership included in their tuition fee; alumni and staff may purchase memberships separately.

Opening hours extend from 07:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends during term time. Holiday hours are published on the sports website. Accessible changing facilities and pool hoists ensure inclusive access.

Team sports

Luma competes in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues across more than thirty sports including football, rugby, hockey, netball, basketball and cricket. Trials for competitive squads take place during Welcome Week; recreational players can join development squads without trials.

The annual Varsity match against our local rivals draws crowds to the outdoor pitches each spring. Sports scholarships support high-performing athletes with coaching, strength and conditioning, and flexible academic arrangements where competition schedules demand travel.

Recreational activities

Intramural leagues offer weekly competition in five-a-side football, netball and badminton without the commitment of BUCS training schedules. Pay-as-you-go classes include yoga, spin, boxercise and aqua aerobics. Student instructors lead many classes, providing employment opportunities alongside participation.

Outdoor enthusiasts join the Mountaineering Club and Canoe Club for trips to the Peak District, Wales and the Lake District. Equipment hire is available through the sports centre at subsidised rates.

Health and performance

Sports science students access biomechanics and physiology laboratories for applied learning. Physiotherapy clinics operated by postgraduate students offer discounted treatment to university members under qualified supervision.

The Get Active programme encourages students who are new to exercise to build sustainable habits through beginner sessions, buddy schemes and wellbeing challenges linked to the university's mental health strategy.
