Luma secures £4.2m grant for West Midlands renewable energy research

A consortium led by Luma University has been awarded £4.2 million by UK Research and Innovation to develop community-scale renewable energy solutions across the West Midlands.

Luma University will lead a three-year research programme examining how small towns and suburban communities across the West Midlands can integrate solar, battery storage and smart grid technologies without requiring major infrastructure overhaul. The project brings together engineers from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, economists from the Business School, and community partners including Luma Borough Council and several housing associations operating in the region.

Professor James Okonkwo, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Infrastructure, said the funding recognises that energy transition must work for ordinary neighbourhoods, not only for large cities. "Many residents in Luma and surrounding areas live in post-war housing stock with limited roof space and ageing electrical systems. Our research will test practical retrofit packages that landlords, councils and homeowners can actually afford," he explained.

The programme will establish a living laboratory on the university's Edgewater campus, where researchers will monitor energy flows across a cluster of demonstration buildings including Riverside Hall and the newly refurbished Engineering Workshop. PhD students and MSc researchers will have the opportunity to contribute to field trials, data analysis and policy recommendations.

Industry partners include a regional energy supplier and two Midlands-based construction firms specialising in low-carbon refurbishment. The team expects to publish interim findings in autumn 2027 and to host a public exhibition showcasing results at Luma's annual Green Futures Week.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Chen described the award as validation of the university's commitment to research with regional impact. "Luma has always been rooted in this community. This project ensures our academic expertise translates directly into warmer homes, lower bills and cleaner air for local residents," she said.
