Clubs and Societies

Luma Students' Union supports more than 120 clubs and societies covering academic interests, faith and culture, campaigning, media, performance and recreational activities. Membership is open to all registered students, and most societies charge a nominal fee of £5–£15 per year to cover equipment and event costs.

The annual Freshers' Fair during Welcome Week is the easiest way to discover societies. Stallholders demonstrate what their group offers, sign up new members and schedule introductory meetings. If you miss the fair, browse the full directory on the students' union website and contact societies directly throughout the year.

Subject-based societies including the Law Society, Nursing Society, Engineering Society and Psychology Society organise guest lectures, revision sessions, networking events with employers and social activities. These societies complement your degree, helping you build contacts in your field and develop skills valued by graduate recruiters.

The Debating Society and Model United Nations team compete nationally, while the Enterprise Society supports students developing business ideas through workshops and pitch competitions linked to the Business School's incubation programme.

Cultural societies celebrate the diversity of Luma's student body, including the African Caribbean Society, South Asian Society, LGBTQ+ Society and International Students' Association. These groups organise cultural events, festivals, discussion forums and peer support networks.

Faith societies including the Christian Union, Islamic Society and Hindu Society provide worship spaces, study groups and community activities. The Chaplaincy team works alongside faith societies to promote interfaith dialogue and pastoral support regardless of religious affiliation.

Students wishing to establish a new society should contact the activities team at the students' union with a proposal outlining purpose, membership interest and planned activities. Approved societies receive funding, room booking support, training for committee members and access to promotional channels.

Committee roles including president, treasurer and welfare officer receive training on governance, financial management and event safety. The union's activity grant scheme provides up to £500 for new societies in their first year.

Creative outlets include the Drama Society, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band and student newspaper Luma Voice. The Media Society produces video content and podcasts, while the Gaming Society hosts tournaments and LAN events in the students' union building.

Performance groups regularly showcase work at the annual Arts Festival and in venues across Luma town centre. Previous productions have transferred to the Birmingham Fringe and received regional press coverage.
