Health Services
NHS registration, campus medical support and health advice for Luma students.
Registering with a GP
All students living in Luma for term time should register with a local NHS GP practice. Luma University Medical Centre on campus accepts registrations from students living in halls and within the practice catchment area. Registration forms are available online and at Welcome Week clinics.
Register promptly after arrival—do not wait until you are unwell. If you remain registered with your home GP elsewhere in England, you may still access the campus medical centre as a temporary resident for up to three months.
Campus medical centre
The medical centre offers appointments for general illness, contraception, mental health referrals, travel vaccinations and minor injuries. Nurses run daily triage clinics; doctors hold surgeries by appointment. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 08:30–17:30 during term time with reduced hours in vacation periods.
Prescriptions are sent electronically to pharmacies in Luma town centre. Students with ongoing conditions should bring a summary of their medical history and current medications when registering.
Dental and optical care
NHS dental practices in Luma accept new patients periodically; the medical centre reception maintains a list of local practices currently registering. Dental charges follow NHS banding unless you qualify for exemption through low income or age.
University bursaries do not cover dental or optical costs, but students on low incomes may access the NHS Low Income Scheme. The students' union Advice team can help with application forms.
Emergency and out-of-hours care
For life-threatening emergencies, call 999. Luma General Hospital accident and emergency department is a ten-minute bus ride from campus. For urgent but non-emergency needs when the medical centre is closed, call NHS 111 for triage and direction to appropriate services.
Keep a basic first aid kit in your accommodation and know the location of defibrillators on campus—maps are published by Estates and Facilities. Mental health crises should be directed to the counselling service during hours or the out-of-hours support line overnight.
